The Threat of the Honest Politician

In the age of gaffes, soundbites, and Romney the flub machine, politicians are given a shorter leash by their staffs. Some, like Romney, should probably never be put in front of a live camera, but with Joe Biden as an example, staff members should wonder whether their restrictive control of the politicians is doing more harm than good.

The artifice of teleprompters and talking points is becoming the rule. It’s not a system that the Joe Biden of 1972, the year he won a Senate seat at age 29, would recognize.
